1. Know Your Current Unit

Look at the data label on your existing water heater. It tells you: fuel type (gas or electric), tank capacity in gallons, model number, serial number, and the year of manufacture. This information is useful for knowing what you have, determining its age, and confirming what the replacement will need to connect to.

2. Know Your Bedroom Count

The right replacement size is primarily determined by how many bedrooms your home has — this is the most practical proxy for household size and hot water demand. WaterHeaterMan's AI sizing tool handles this automatically when you enter your address, but it's useful to know going in: 1–2 bedrooms = 40 gallon, 3 bedrooms = 50 gallon, 4 bedrooms = 65 gallon, 5+ bedrooms = 75 gallon or tankless.

3. Decide: Tank or Tankless

If you have a tank unit now, a tank replacement is the simplest and least expensive option. If you want unlimited hot water and lower long-term energy costs and are prepared for a higher upfront investment, a tankless conversion is worth considering. See our full tank vs. tankless comparison for the detailed analysis.

4. Check Access to the Unit Location

Is your water heater in an easy-to-access utility room, or in a tight closet, low attic, or crawlspace? Difficult access extends installation time and in some cases affects price. Note this when booking so your technician comes prepared.

5. Check for a Closed Plumbing System

Look at your main water supply line where it enters your home. If there is a small cylindrical device called a pressure reducing valve (PRV) — usually brass, about 6 inches long — you have a closed plumbing system. An expansion tank is required by code and should be included in your installation. WaterHeaterMan includes this automatically.

Quick tip: If you are not sure whether you have a PRV, your technician can verify it on arrival. Better to mention it when booking so they come prepared with the right expansion tank.

6. Plan the Installation Window

A standard tank replacement takes 2 to 4 hours. Clear the area around your water heater of stored items before the technician arrives. Make sure someone 18 years or older is home for the entire installation window. You do not need to stay nearby — just accessible.

7. Know Where Your Shutoffs Are

Before your technician arrives, locate: the cold water inlet valve on top of the water heater, the gas shutoff valve at the unit (for gas units), or the circuit breaker for the water heater (for electric units). Your technician can find these, but knowing in advance speeds things up.
